What an experience!!!! I honestly think skiing is the hardest thing I have ever tried to do. Elaine and I made breakfast for our two friend Phillip and Ashley and then we set out for Paoli. The drive time was about 50 min which wasn't too bad considering I was driving.
The first thing we had to do was bundle up and get our tickets so we could go get our boots and skis. Once we received out tickets we headed up to the rental room, which smelled like dirty feet, to get our boots and skis. The first pair of boots I tried on felt like my leg was getting all circulation cut off, the second pair was perfect. During this time of trying on the boots Elaine was having a mental break down and a physical break down because she couldn't get her boot on and because it was cutting off her circulation. After getting our boots we stood in line forever to get fitted for our skis. Finally we get our skis, after I about had a heat stroke, and headed out for the slopes.
We found some ski poles and walked out to a level spot so we could connect the boots to our skis. Everyone else seemed to be doing just fine with this task while I couldn't get one ski connected. Not being able to get the ski on eventually led to me having to take the other ski off and go back inside to get help. The only thing the guy could say was "there is probably snow on your boot". So I headed back out and as much as I hate to admit it, he was right.
Finally I had both skis on and was ready to go find the discovery zone so I could learn the tricks of skiing. The discovery zone was up hill and I was not about to take those skis off to get there. We reached the top of the hill (no one had fallen yet) and it was like a domino affect, Phillip hit the ground and following in suit Elaine hit the ground. I honestly don't think I have laughed that hard in my entire life. One of the instructors walked up and looked at Elaine and told her to take her skis off to get to the first station. I was then forced to take my skis off to get to the discovery zone, thank goodness the first station was learning how to put your skis on.
We progressed through the basic stations and then we had to actually ski down a hill. I was the first one to go and it went way better than I thought and at that point I thought "I CAN DO THIS". Everyone came down the hill and we were instructed to head back to the top of the hill by means of the magic carpet. This carpet contraption was like a moving side walk in the airport but you had to get on in it with skis on. I managed to be successful, Phillip managed to be successful, Ashley managed to be successful and poor Elaine bit the dust. We were all at the top of the hill and there was no was we would be able to make it back down the hill, so she was left to fight for herself.
Everyone was tired and I had yet to ride the ski lift. Like I said in my pre ski blog I was going to ride that ski lift one way or another. We walked to the top of the hill and the sign said "Bunny Meadows". Put my skis on and made my way to the part where I would take off. I gave myself one good push and I was off, skiing down a hill faster and faster every second. I was focusing on my feet and not where I was going and when I looked up I could no longer see where I was supposed to go. About 1000 feet in front of me was a big drop and to the sides of me were big drops. In a panic I started trying to slow down and my skis got crossed and I went for the ride of my life. My skis fell off and I spun around and I was flat on my back. That was it for me, I was done and didn't ride the ski lift.
Overall the day was a good day. There is nothing like spending a day over Christmas break with good friends and a beautiful girlfriend.
If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who
falls and has no one to help him up!
